Billboards are a part of life. It seems you cannot go anywhere without driving by billboards of every size and subject: giant ones, small ones, funny ones, thought-provoking ones. Even here, in rural Michigan, billboards crowd the road clamoring for your attention. Sometimes though, billboards do not achieve what the designer originally intended. Sometimes, its message seems cryptic, is lost on many passerby’s, and leaves one scratching their head in wonder and confusion instead of laughter or decision. It may surprise you to know, billboards were a part of the life of that biblical prophet Zechariah also. But the billboard he read was anything buy cryptic. Its message was clear and fearful.
Zechariah 5:1-2 – “Again I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, a flying scroll! And he said to me, ‘What do you see?’ I answered, ‘I see a flying scroll. Its length is twenty cubits, and its width ten cubits.’”
OK, so maybe it says “scroll” not “billboard” but its dimensions (30 feet by 15 feet) and purpose (to send a message) are just like that of a billboard so stay with me! What was the message of this billboard – nothing less than a message from God Almighty warning of impending judgment upon those who deny His commands!
Zechariah 5:3-4 – “Then he said to me, ‘This is the curse that goes out over the face of the whole land. For everyone who steals shall be cleaned out according to what is on one side, and everyone who swears falsely shall be cleaned out according to what is on the other side. I will send it out, declares the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter the house of the thief, and the house of him who swears falsely by my name. And it shall remain in his house and consume it, both timber and stones.”
What I really like about this billboard is its size. There is no fine print – the message is written in big bold plain letters on a big bold billboard for all to see and understand – The Lord of Hosts will punish and destroy all who deal falsely with Him and others.
Now allow me to point out another “billboard” from God that is, just like the one Zechariah saw, big, bold and plain for all to see!
Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”
Do you see it? Do you see God’s billboard? It is creation! All of creation is God’s giant billboard to the world of his glory and handiwork!
Romans 1:19-20 say, “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.”
God is advertising (displaying) his glory to each and every person each and every day! You can’t miss it or its message – “God made me and he is glorious. God made me, bow down and worship him! God made me, submit in reverence and awe to him!” Nothing confusing about that is there.
